Photo caption - In the region near the Shire known as the Barrow-downs dwell some evil spirits known as the barrow-wights, supposedly sent by the Witch-King to haunt the tombs of his enemies. One of these spirits captures the hobbits and puts them inside a barrow, keeping them under a spell. The hobbits were nearly slain by it, but Frodo managed to awake and attack the spirit, gaining some time before they were finally rescued.

Photo caption - Unlike in the movie, in the novel Frodo never sent Sam home. Sam accompanied him throughout the whole journey and together they crossed Shelob's tunnel. It was him who Gollum attacked when they made it out the tunnel, that's the reason why he couldn't help Frodo from being poisoned by Shelob.

Text - There is a character in Middle Earth that doesn't get affected by the One Ring at all. His name is Tom Bombadil and he's probably the most mysterious character ever created by Tolkien. He rescues the hobbits in two occasions: when they are trapped and nearly killed by an old willow in the Old Forest beside the Shire, and when they are captured by a barrow-wight in the Barrow-downs (mentioned above). He was the one that took some daggers out of the barrow and gave them to the hobbits (incl

Photo caption - The wife of Denethor, Finduilas, died just twelve years after they got married. Denethor aparentely got depressed after her death, as he became more silent and grim than before. He became very unstable and got obsessed over the threat of Mordor, which ultimately made him start looking in the palantír, being prematurely aged and worn out in the process.

Photo caption - Boromir and Faramir deeply loved each other. Even if Denethor loved Boromir more and favoured him, Faramir was neverjealous and there was no rivalry between him and his brother. He admired Boromir and always thought of him as an unmatchable warrior.

Text - এ Galadriel's gift to Sam was a little box of wood with earth inside. This earth came from Galadriel's orchard and had the capability to make fertile any soil it was put on. It was with this earth that Sam could help restoring the Shire's gardens and vegetation after they were destroyed by Saruman and his men.

Facial expression - When the war ended and Aragorn was crowned King of Gondor, he appointed Faramir as Prince of Ithilien, the land he used to defend alongside the Rangers of the South. Faramir also kept the charge of Steward of Gondor that he inherited from his father.

Human - Glorfindel (who doesn't appear in the movies) was the one who rescued Frodo from the Nazgûl when they chased him right before arriving to Rivendell. He's a mighty Elf-lord "of a house of princes", as described in the novel, and was sent by Elrond in search of Frodo. He's actually a reincarnated elf from the First Age whose last deed in his previous life was to kll a Balrog (he died doing so).

Facial expression - Aragorn was taken to Rivendell when he was 2 years old and his true identity and lineage were kept a secret until he was 20. Elrond was like a father to him and came to love him as a son.

Poster - Boromir's death takes place in the first chapter of The Two Towers, not on The Fellowship of the Ring like in the movie trilogy. However, the circumstances of his death remain the same: killed by an awful lot of arrows (picture shows only two, though) while defending Merry and Pippin. He managed to kill at least twenty orcs before falling.

Sky - After Aragorn died, Legolas headed to the Grey Havens to leave Middle Earth taking Gimli alongside him. Galadriel achieved that the dwarf was admitted into the Undying Lands in order to spend the rest of his days in company of his best friend.

Nature - Along with the earth Galadriel gave to Sam (check Part 5 for more detail), in the box there was a seed of a mallorn, the tree that grows in the woods of Lothlórien. Sam hadn't noticed it until he opened the box after they returned and settled down in the Shire. He planted the seed in the same place where the tree under which Bilbo made his speech was (this tree had been cut down).

Text - Also after Aragorn's death, Arwen bid farewell to her children and left Gondor. She wandered through the empty woods of Lothlórien for a while, until finally she laid herself upon the very hill on which she and Aragorn once pledged their love, and passed away.

Text - GAINLER Lobelia Sackville-Baggins (that annoying hobbit woman that once stole some silver spoons from Bilbo) left Frodo all of her money when she died, in order for him to help the hobbits that were made homeless by all the troubles Saruman caused in the Shire (she felt responsible because her son was involved). Thus the long enmity between the Baggins and the Sackville-Baggins came to an end.

Fictional character - Legolas runs out of arrows twice in the novel. The first time is during the attack from the Uruk-hai in Amon Hen, where Boromir died. The second time is during the battle at Helm's Deep, after shooting his last arrow in order to kill an orc that led a charge against Aragorn.

Bird of prey - The eagles were never a choice to bring the One Ring to Mordor since the mission relied in stealth and secrecy. Even if it was just one, a big eagle entering Mordor would have been spotted right away and brought down, spoiling the mission and delivering Sauron the Ring at his very doorstep.
  • 18
Text - Pippin managed to kill the chief of the trolls at the Black Gate. He stabbed him so hard that his blade pierced deeply into the troll's organs. The troll then fell on Pippin, knocking him out. The last thing Pippin heard before going unconscious was the crying of the men announcing the eagles were arriving to the battle.

Facial hair - Balin, believing the rumours that said the dwarves were strong and numerous enough to enter back in Moria, took Ori and Oin and many of the dwarven people and headed there, but just to find their death. Balin was killed by an orc one day he went to see the Mirrormere (a lake near Moria). Oin was taken by the tentacled creature (known as the Watcher in the Water). And Ori died in the last stand against the orcs in the Chamber of Mazarbul.

Sky - Although it is not common, elves can actually grow beards. In the novel, when Frodo and the others are in the Grey Havens about to board the ship to the Undying Lands, Cirdan, the guardian of the havens, is described as having a long grey beard. He's most certainly the oldest elf in all Middle Earth.

Photo caption - When Sam had the Ring after taking it from Frodo when he thought him dead, the Ring began to tempt him by making him fantasise about him being the hero that was going to take Sauron down and create beautiful gardens from the withered lands, if he just reclaimed it for him. His love for Frodo and his humility were the things that helped him stand strong and defeat the temptation.
